The chalk cliffs in the North East of Ruegen/Germany, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania State, are often said to be the islands famous landmark.
Forming an exceptionally beautiful landscape they are more or less lined up along a coastline which extends over several kilometers from the town of Sassnitz to the village of Lohme. The white cliffs contrasting sharply with the green or even the fall colores of the beech trees and the deep blue of the Baltic Sea reach an average altitude of 100 metres.
Partly the sea looks milky by the chalk which reaches under the sea and gets dissolved by the movements of the waves.
